A 19-year-old woman died after the car she was travelling in overturned on the PI-115 in the village of Curralinho, in the rural zone of São Miguel do Tapuio, northern Piauí, on the night of Saturday 31. She was identified as Iara Vieira de Sousa.
According to the 15th Military Police Battalion, Iara was found lying in a brush area roughly 20 metres from the vehicle and still showed vital signs. She was given first aid and taken to the hospital in São Miguel do Tapuio, where she did not survive her injuries.
The driver, João Soares de Oliveira, 42, was found inside the overturned car. Military police said he initially told officers he was alone and denied that a passenger had been with him, confirming he had been accompanied only after agents located the young woman near the vehicle. According to the incident report, he showed signs of impairment and appeared to be under the effect of psychoactive substances, and the Military Police treat him as a suspect of driving under the influence.
Before the crash, the driver had been at a motel in São Miguel do Tapuio. According to the Military Police, the owner of the establishment called officers after the man left without paying his bill. The owner told police he had found traces of a substance similar to cocaine in the room occupied by the couple, but the room had already been cleaned by the housekeeping staff, which prevented forensic examination. The establishment provided security camera footage which, according to the Civil Police, shows the damage caused by the vehicle to its gate.
The case was registered as culpable homicide while driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or another psychoactive substance. The Civil Police are expected to investigate the circumstances of the accident and the possible responsibility of the driver for the young woman's death.
