Donald Trump said the conflict with Iran could escalate if the two sides fail to reach an agreement, while expressing optimism that a deal was possible. He made the comments in an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News.

Trump called the situation “a sort of war,” rather than a conflict in the traditional sense. He said the United States had dealt a heavy blow to Iran’s navy, claiming that 159 ships had been destroyed.

He said Iran strongly wanted an agreement and that there were “excellent chances” of reaching one. Trump also said the United States was negotiating from a position of strength and could end the matter at any time.

“If I can reach an agreement, I prefer to do that,” Trump said, adding that a deal would save many lives.
