Ukraine's official application for warning the public about the threat of Russian air strikes was "probably the victim of hostile interference," the Ukrainian air force said on Sunday evening. The statement was issued just minutes after the end of a localized humanitarian truce.
"The 'Air Alert' application has probably been hacked. Currently, the information being disseminated concerning threat levels does not correspond to reality," the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation also said, according to accounts of the incident.
The warning followed the appearance on the app of messages referring in particular to a threat of nuclear radiation and to chemical threats. Officials did not provide further detail on the origin of the intrusion or on the content of the alerts that were circulated.
The air force and the disinformation centre both urged that the threat levels displayed on the compromised application should not be treated as accurate while the situation was being addressed.
