Americans voting in the 2026 midterm elections are also being asked to weigh in on a wide range of state-level ballot measures. A total of 145 proposals are before voters in 39 states, introduced either by elected officials or by citizens.

The measures cover subjects with significant local implications, including bond approvals and abortion restrictions, alongside more symbolic questions such as choosing an official state weapon.

One closely debated measure is California’s Proposition 40. It would impose a one-time 5% tax on the wealth of taxpayers whose total assets exceed $1 billion. The proposal would be a first in the United States, and is estimated to affect about 250 Californians and raise around $100 billion.
