On Monday afternoon, November 2, a wooden cross caught fire at the Senhor Bom Jesus de Nazaré Municipal Cemetery in Palhoça, located in the Greater Florianópolis region. The incident occurred during All Souls' Day in the Passa Vinte neighborhood, where video footage captured the flames engulfing the structure.
According to a statement from the city administration, the blaze was triggered by a large volume of lit candles combined with strong winds, which caused wax to accumulate and ignite the cross. The Santa Catarina Military Fire Corps (CBMSC) logged the event as an initial fire at approximately 4:31 PM. Authorities confirmed that the flames consumed candle remnants, plastic flowers, and the wooden cross situated at the rear of the cemetery.
The situation lasted for about five minutes before being brought under control. Due to parked cars on both sides of the street blocking access for a fire truck, the response team utilized a carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher to put out the fire. Thanks to this rapid intervention, the incident did not escalate further, and no injuries were reported.
