An 18-year-old woman identified as Anabella Silva Cardoso was shot in the head inside her residence in Rio das Pedras, located in the Southwest Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on the night of Sunday, November 1. The victim was transported in critical condition to the Municipal Souza Aguiar Hospital. According to police reports, there is a suspicion of brain death, and the protocol to confirm this status is currently underway.
Her partner, Anderson Barbosa Alencar, was located by agents from the Capital Homicide Department (DHC) and taken into custody in the early hours of Monday, November 2. He was arrested in flagrante delicto for attempted feminicide and illegal possession of a firearm. Initially, Alencar told police that the discharge occurred accidentally while he was handling a pistol inside the house, claiming he threw the weapon on the floor and then assisted his partner.
However, investigators found significant inconsistencies in this account. During a search of the property, agents could not locate the pistol at the spot indicated by Alencar. Instead, the firearm was discovered hidden on the roof slab, concealed among bricks and tiles inside a bag. Police also seized a revolver, ammunition, and magazines from the same location.
The DHC stated that the manner in which the weapons were hidden raised doubts regarding the version of an accidental discharge. Consequently, Alencar was formally charged with attempted feminicide and illegal possession of a permitted-use firearm. The Civil Police have requested his preventive detention from the courts. While the case is currently classified as attempted feminicide, authorities noted that if brain death is confirmed, the crime could be reclassified as consummated feminicide. Investigations continue to clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the concealment of the weapons.
