At 96, retired teacher Ema Vargas fulfilled her dream of launching her first book at the Porto Alegre Book Fair. Titled “I Come to Offer My Heart,” the publication brings together more than 100 poems handwritten in a memory notebook over the course of her life.
The poems reflect Vargas’s personal philosophy and her belief that time should not be seen as a limitation. She says she tries to encourage people who feel old or discouraged, reminding them that they can still face life positively.
For the author, labels related to age should be set aside. She argues that being considered too young or too old should not determine what a person is able to do.
The book includes reflections on the passing of time and human relationships. In one poem, Vargas addresses time and asks it to be sincere with her. Another passage describes affection as something capable of softening the difficulties encountered along life’s path.
Vargas hopes the publication will inspire readers and says releasing it has brought her great joy. Beyond writing, she also maintains an active routine by dancing tango in her spare time.
Her daughter, psychologist Maria Alice Vargas, said the family is very happy and proud of the vitality the writer continues to show at 96. Asked whether she intends to keep writing, Ema Vargas replied that she does, if possible.
