A municipal inspection of 23 food businesses in Barcelona’s Vila de Gràcia district found 242 violations and resulted in precautionary closure measures at 11 shops. The operation took place on October 29 as part of the city’s Pla Endreça initiative.

Inspectors visited convenience stores, 24-hour supermarkets, other food retailers and greengrocers. They checked compliance with rules covering business licences, public health, street use and signage, taxes, employment, waste disposal and electrical connections.

The most frequent issue was operating activities not covered by the business’s licence, with 99 violations recorded. Inspectors also reported 23 public health violations, 52 related to urban landscape rules, 23 concerning waste management, 10 involving labour and social security regulations, and 15 each involving municipal and state taxes. Five violations concerned the use of public space.

The city said nine shops were subject to precautionary closure over electricity fraud or irregularities in their electrical supply, while three were closed because of pests. The article reports 11 closures overall, but the two reasons listed account for 12 cases.

Around 100 personnel took part, including municipal inspectors, police, public health officials, labour inspectors, tax authorities, waste-management staff and Endesa representatives.

This was the 17th coordinated multi-agency inspection carried out by Barcelona City Council during the current term. Since November 2023, these operations have examined 682 establishments, identified 5,097 violations and imposed 110 precautionary measures, with more than 1,200 personnel involved.
