Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever formally presented his resignation to King Philippe this Monday after the governing coalition failed to reach an agreement on the national budget. The Royal Palace confirmed in a statement that the Prime Minister submitted his resignation following the breakdown of budget negotiations, but noted that the King has kept the decision in suspense.

King Philippe is set to begin consultations with the leaders of the parties forming the governing majority starting Tuesday. According to the palace, the Prime Minister will be received by the King again on Friday, November 6, to discuss the situation further. The resignation comes after months of division within the coalition regarding measures necessary to address a budget deficit of ten billion euros.

In his statement, King Philippe expressed regret over the lack of an agreement that would provide the country with a credible budget capable of meeting current challenges. He emphasized that in a context marked by strong geopolitical uncertainties and significant economic challenges, Belgium cannot afford a prolonged political crisis. The monarch appealed to the sense of responsibility of all parties involved, urging them to prioritize the general interest and the spirit of compromise.

Bart de Wever assumed office as Prime Minister on February 3, 2025, leading a government coalition composed of five parties.
