Gina Hinojosa has won the Texas governor’s race with 57.1% of the vote, defeating Republican Greg Abbott, who received 41.6%. The result ends a 36-year stretch without a Democratic victory in the state’s gubernatorial election. Ann Richards, elected in 1990, was the last Democrat to serve as Texas governor.
Hinojosa, a civil rights and labor lawyer, has served in the Texas House of Representatives since 2016. Before entering politics, she worked on legal cases involving workers’ rights and campaign finance. She has also chaired the Texas Democratic Party.
Abbott was seeking a fourth consecutive term. He was first elected governor in 2015. Texas has not elected a Democrat governor since 1990, or a Democrat to statewide office since 1994.
