AUSTIN — James Talarico has ended a 38-year stretch without a Democratic senator elected in Texas, according to the available report. The former Presbyterian seminary student is the first Democrat from the Lone Star State to reach the Senate since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988.

Before entering politics, Talarico worked as a middle-school teacher in one of San Antonio’s poorest areas. The report describes him as having left his path toward ministry for a political career.
