The practice of gerrymandering in the United States dates back nearly to the era of the Founding Fathers, yet it has reached an unprecedented level during the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections. While redistricting for the House of Representatives typically occurs only once every ten years following the national decennial census, nine states have exceptionally redrawn their electoral maps in anticipation of the vote scheduled for November 3.
This surge in activity marks a significant departure from historical norms, as only two states had previously undertaken such mid-decade redistricting efforts. Under the impetus of the White House occupant, the Republican Party has multiplied these partisan redistricting operations. However, despite the intensity of these maneuvers, there are indications that the results could disappoint the very promoters who orchestrated them.
