The Grande Oriente Lusitano (GOL), Portugal’s largest Masonic obedience, has condemned punitive responses to protests over housing and called on authorities to distinguish peaceful demonstrations from conduct that breaks the law.
In a message titled “For human dignity, social justice and respect for fundamental rights,” GOL Grand Master Fernando Cabecinha said many Portuguese citizens and families are struggling to access adequate housing, which he described as a fundamental right and a condition of human dignity. He also expressed concern about what he called inadequate political and institutional responses to the crisis.
Cabecinha warned that worsening living conditions, falling purchasing power and difficulties accessing essential goods and services can deepen public dissatisfaction and distrust in institutions. If people feel abandoned or ignored, he said, that sense of injustice could weaken confidence in democracy and be exploited by anti-democratic and extremist forces.
He urged government leaders and authorities to show restraint and responsibility, prioritising dialogue and fair solutions when faced with social protest. A democratic society, he argued, should not use repressive or punitive measures against peaceful demands for rights, while ensuring that those who break the law or violate others’ rights are held accountable.
The GOL said any action by authorities should follow the principles of legality, necessity and proportionality, and clearly distinguish legitimate freedom of assembly and expression from unlawful conduct. Cabecinha added that listening to people in hardship and protecting the most vulnerable are essential to strengthening social cohesion and trust in the future.
