Brazilian Workers’ Party president Edinho Silva has been tasked with negotiating with Centrão parties, including Republicanos and MDB, as President Lula seeks to broaden his support base for the next term. CNN political analyst Jussara Soares reported that meetings with party leaders are expected in the coming days.
The discussions are expected to address whether the parties will take part in the new government. According to Soares, Centrão leaders have already signaled openness to talks.
Any government positions offered may come with an explicit expectation of support on key votes. Soares said the negotiations are likely to make clear that ministerial posts should be matched by backing for the government’s priority measures.
The effort comes amid a sizable PL bloc in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. One criticism of Lula’s third term was that the Workers’ Party held sway in the presidential administration, leaving limited room for other parties in strategic positions. The current talks could consider opening up more influential roles to Centrão parties.
The broader transition also includes internal decisions, such as the composition of the economic team. Soares said the planned meetings should bring greater clarity to the shape of the next government and its parliamentary support.
