Democrat Annie Andrews is projected to have won South Carolina’s Senate race, giving Democrats their first victory in the state in 28 years. Andrews, a former paediatrician, was on course for an upset in Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to CBS, the BBC’s US partner.

Republican Darline Graham was appointed to the seat in July following the sudden death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. Her appointment had the support of President Donald Trump, who won South Carolina by 18 points in 2024.

A political newcomer, Graham acknowledged during her primary campaign that national security was not her area of expertise. In a debate, she was asked about the US position on Taiwan and replied that national security was “not my thing” but that she supported the military.

Lindsey Graham was elected to the Senate in 2002 and became one of Washington’s most influential voices on foreign policy, often advocating US military intervention overseas.
