The accident occurred on Rua Farrula, near number 253, in the Nova Aurora neighborhood, close to Largo da Baiana. The children and the driver, identified as Gabriel Gaspar Ferreira, are members of the same family.
Ferreira told Military Police officers who responded to the incident that he lost control of the pickup after driving over a storm drain. He said the vehicle was traveling at approximately 60 km/h and was not speeding.
The ten-year-old died at the scene. The other injured children were taken to the Municipal Hospital of Belford Roxo. At the latest update, there was no information about their health conditions.
The boy’s body was sent to the region’s Legal Medical Institute. The Civil Police said forensic experts had been called and that investigative measures were underway to determine what happened.
