Donald Trump described Democratic candidates as “extremists” during a campaign event in Washington on the eve of the midterm elections. The speech, held beside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, was described as his final in-person campaign appearance in the capital in support of Republican candidates.

Trump called the midterms “the most important of our lives” and said Democrats had nominated “the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history.” He urged voters to decide “whether these extremists will receive power or not.”

At the time, polling indicated a favorable outlook for Democrats. A Democratic majority in Congress could give the party tools to exert pressure on Trump, including investigations into him and members of his family, demands for federal officials to testify, and potential impeachment proceedings. Removing Trump from office was considered unlikely, though such steps could shape public opinion and affect the Republican Party’s image ahead of the next presidential election.

A substantial part of Trump’s remarks focused on defending renovations to the Reflecting Pool, which had drawn controversy. According to reports, Trump wanted to paint the pool blue, leading to an algae bloom and the site’s temporary covering. The historically significant location, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a famous speech in the 1960s, was closed to visitors during the disruption. Trump said vandalism at the pool had prompted the intervention.
