On Monday afternoon, President Donald Trump held what is expected to be his final press conference before voters head to the polls for the midterm elections. Standing in front of the newly opened Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool in Washington DC, he unveiled the delayed results of a $14 million renovation project. The event took place on the eve of a consequential election day, with recent polls indicating that most voters feel the president has become too focused on building projects within the nation's capital.
Trump detailed specific changes to the pool's pipes, the surrounding grass, and the granite during his remarks. "This project should be a project that unites all Americans," he told reporters. However, the initiative has faced significant setbacks since its initial reveal in June. Instead of the promised "American flag blue" water, a massive algae bloom turned the pool green, and the coating began to peel away shortly after.
The administration initially alleged that vandals were responsible for the damage, though no evidence was produced to substantiate these claims. Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn was charged with alleged damage but the case was later dropped by US Attorney Jeanine Pirro's office, a move that infuriated the president. Hearn's attorneys stated that the dismissal did not erase the abuse of government power in arresting and charging a patriotic American who did nothing wrong.
During the event, Trump accused his Democratic predecessors, Joe Biden and Barack Obama, of overspending on previous renovations to the reflecting pool. He once again blamed vandals for purposefully damaging the current administration's work without providing evidence. Roughly 20 minutes into his remarks on the pool, less than 24 hours before Election Day, Trump pivoted to acknowledge the crucial nature of Tuesday's midterm elections.
He noted that the party of a sitting president often loses seats during midterms but expressed confidence in their chances, stating, "We gave this a very strong shot." For weeks, polls have shown Democratic candidates narrowly ahead of Republicans in key races, including competitive Senate contests in Texas, Alaska, Kansas, Iowa, and Maine. Voters have expressed dissatisfaction with Trump's handling of the presidency, particularly regarding the US economy and cost of living.
Prices for gas and groceries have risen since the beginning of the year, and inflation has remained stubbornly high. This economic strain is largely attributed to the war with Iran that Trump started at the end of February.
