Around 250 million Americans are eligible to vote in the 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3. The contest will determine whether President Donald Trump’s Republican Party retains control of both chambers of Congress, which it has held since 2024.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are being contested. Before the election, Republicans held 219 seats and Democrats 214, with two additional seats vacant in Florida and Texas. The number of representatives elected by each state is linked to its population.

In the 100-seat Senate, Republicans began with 53 seats, compared with 45 Democrats and two independents who caucus with the Democrats. A total of 35 seats are on the ballot: 22 held by Republicans and 13 by Democrats. If the chamber is split 50-50, Republicans would retain a narrow majority because Vice President J.D. Vance can break a tie.

Voters are also choosing governors in 36 of the 50 states. The seats up for election are currently held by 18 Republicans and 18 Democrats.

Results are being reported by district and state, with projected outcomes based on Associated Press calls when the vote margin is sufficient. The final polling places are due to close in Hawaii and Alaska between 6 and 7 a.m. Paris time on Wednesday, November 4. Complete results may therefore not be available before Wednesday morning in mainland France, and close contests or runoffs could take several days to resolve.
