Americans are voting on Tuesday in midterm elections that could determine how much congressional support President Donald Trump has for the rest of his term. More than 50 million people had already voted early, according to the information available ahead of Election Day.

The contests include all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats and governorships in 36 states. The results will shape control of Congress for the next two years and could affect the president’s ability to advance legislation or face challenges to his administration’s actions.

Recent projections put the Democratic Party, which opposes Trump, in a stronger position to take the House. The Senate contest is less settled, although some forecasting organizations give Democrats a slight edge.

Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers. In the House, they have 218 seats, compared with 214 for Democrats; one seat is held by an independent and two are vacant. Republicans hold 53 Senate seats, while Democrats have 47, including two independents who usually vote with them.

Midterm elections take place halfway through a president’s term and are often viewed as a measure of public approval of the administration. Trump is not on the ballot. The members elected in these races are due to take office in January 2027.

The House and Senate results may take days to become clear, as each state counts its own votes and counting schedules vary. Initial results are expected on Tuesday night, but the balance of power may not be settled immediately.
