Supermarket fridges and freezers in seven European countries have been affected by a fresh suspected cyberattack, according to the information available. In some cases, the appliances’ thermostats were reportedly increased remotely to as much as 50C (122F), causing them to malfunction.

The incident comes after another apparent cyberattack within the same two-week period, prompting questions over who may be responsible and what their motives could be. The available information does not identify a perpetrator.

The European Union condemned what it described as “a deliberate attempt to disrupt our food supply chain and undermine consumers’ confidence in it”. The affected equipment is used by supermarkets, making the reported incidents a potential disruption to food storage and retail operations across the countries concerned.
