A woman, 33, and a man, 25, were seriously injured when a fire broke out at a home in the Alto do Ipê neighborhood of Barrocas, in Bahia’s Sisal region, early Tuesday. Medical staff said the woman had burns over about 70% of her body and the man over about 60%.

According to the Military Police, witnesses said the couple were inside the house when the fire started. They managed to get out with their clothes alight and called for help. Relatives took them to Barrocas Municipal Hospital.

The man told police the fire may have been caused by a leak from a cooking-gas cylinder. Residents, however, said the couple had argued before the flames began and that disputes between them were frequent.

The woman is awaiting transfer to a more specialized medical facility. No information was available about the man’s condition. Police seized a gas cylinder, parts of the home’s installations and other objects as part of the investigation.
