Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated Republican incumbent Roger Marshall in the race for a U.S. Senate seat in Kansas, winning 51.9% of the vote to Marshall’s 45.2%. The victory marks the first time a Democrat has won a Kansas Senate seat since 1932.

Marshall was seeking a second term in a state that has long favored Republicans. President Donald Trump carried Kansas by 16 percentage points in 2024. Hamilton, a Methodist pastor who leads the state’s largest church, presented himself as a centrist and used a moderate message to appeal to voters across the political spectrum.

Hamilton also sought to connect with voters unhappy with economic conditions, particularly farmers. Republicans criticized some of his positions, including his support for the Black Lives Matter movement and a path to citizenship for immigrants living in the United States without legal documentation.

The Democratic campaign raised more money than Marshall’s and spent $18.3 million more in the race. Polling had shown a close contest, with Hamilton leading by an average of one percentage point.
