Violence following weekend “Gen Z regelt” protests in Frankfurt, Cologne and Hamburg has triggered a political debate over who was responsible and what motivated the attacks. Education Minister Karin Prien of the Christian Democratic Union said the incidents also raised questions about integration.
Speaking to Deutschlandfunk, Prien referred to violent acts by left-wing extremist groups and by people who, she said, appeared to come from migrant communities. She stressed that the aim was not to fuel resentment, but to understand why some people resorted to violence and why integration appears to work less successfully in some groups than in others.
Prien also called for dialogue with young people who took part in the demonstrations without committing violence. She described them as a generation taking a pragmatic view of current conditions and its future, while acknowledging that young people have legitimate reasons for concern. However, she said she did not share all of the movement’s demands, including its positions on military and civic service.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt had previously referred to violent left-wing groups and “migrant troublemakers” who allegedly attacked police and damaged shops after peaceful protests in several cities. Hesse Interior Minister Roman Poseck said two groups had been involved in the unrest in Frankfurt: left-wing extremists initially, followed later by migrant youths. He described the violence as unrestrained.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius rejected that terminology. He questioned what was meant by “migrant groups,” asking whether it included people born in Germany or German citizens from the third generation. Pistorius said such distinctions risked leading the debate in the wrong direction, while noting that he could not independently verify the facts in detail at short notice.
Protest researcher Nina Kolleck told tagesschau24 that violence after the demonstrations was not entirely unexpected, pointing to a deterioration in the broader situation in recent years. Climate activist Luisa Neubauer, meanwhile, criticized the focus on incidents of violence, arguing that it distracted from young people’s concerns. She advised the protest organizers to narrow their demands, saying focused issues make it easier to build pressure.
