A 59-year-old man was seriously injured on Tuesday after being hit by a tree while working at a company in Pombal, in Portugal’s Leiria district, civil protection sources told the Lusa news agency.

Pombal Volunteer Firefighters commander Hugo Gonçalves said the tree had been weakened by Storm Kristin before it struck the worker. An emergency medical and resuscitation vehicle from Coimbra’s Covões Hospital was dispatched, and the man was taken to the University Hospitals of Coimbra.

The alert was received at 11:51 a.m. Eight responders attended the scene, supported by four vehicles from the fire service, the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM) and the National Republican Guard (GNR).
