Brazil’s federal government has added Serra da Capivara Airport, in São Raimundo Nonato in the south of Piauí, to the National Privatization Program. The move makes it eligible for private-sector management through a concession. The inclusion was set out in a decree signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and published in the country’s Official Gazette on Tuesday, November 3.
The airport is one of 13 federally owned regional terminals covered by the measure. Under the decree, each airport will be handled through a separate concession contract, with interested companies selected through a simplified process under the Private Investment Program for Regional Airports, known as AmpliAR.
If no bids are considered valid, the government may use other concession models provided for by the Ministry of Ports and Airports. The National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) will oversee the procedures for bringing regional airports into the program.
The other airports named in the decree are Horácio de Mattos and Paulo Afonso in Bahia; Santa Magalhães, Garanhuns and Araripina in Pernambuco; Porto Alegre do Norte in Mato Grosso; Barreirinhas in Maranhão; Araguaína in Tocantins; Cacoal and Vilhena in Rondônia; and Comandante Ariston Pessoa in Cruz and Canoa Quebrada Dragão do Mar in Aracati, both in Ceará.
