The US midterm elections on November 3 are focused more than ever on Donald Trump, according to Seth Masket, a political science professor at the University of Denver. He told Le Monde that a Democratic victory would not necessarily weaken the president’s influence over the Republican Party.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats are up for election. Voters in 39 states and territories will also choose governors.

Midterms include races at several levels of government, but are generally viewed as a referendum on the administration in Washington. Masket’s research focuses on American political parties, polarization and elections. His book, “The Elephants in the Room: How Trump Voters Seized the Party From Republican Leaders,” examines how Trump’s voters gained control of the Republican Party.
