US voters are heading to the polls on Tuesday to decide control of Congress, with consequences for President Donald Trump’s ability to govern. Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers. If Democrats win either one, they could block legislation and increase congressional scrutiny of the administration through investigations.

All seats in the House of Representatives and around one-third of the Senate seats are being contested. Initial results are expected after polling places close, but it is not yet clear when the balance of power will be known. Counting procedures vary by state, and mail ballots processed later can change early results. Close contests could take several days to resolve.

The new Congress is scheduled to begin its term on January 3, 2027, at noon in Washington, or 6 p.m. Central European Time.
