The United States struck several Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US government official. The official told the Associated Press that Iranian units targeted in the strikes had used surface-to-air missiles against US facilities. Iranian state television reported explosions on Qeshm Island.

The attacks appeared limited and did not signal a full return to fighting. They came on the eve of important US midterm elections, despite President Donald Trump having previously said he would not order strikes on Iran before the vote.

On Monday, Vice President JD Vance said he had discussed negotiations with Iran with Trump. He said both men were optimistic about the prospects for a possible negotiated solution. The unpopular war and its effects on gasoline prices and other parts of the economy are considered a vulnerability for Republicans as they seek to retain their majorities in Congress.

The previous strikes were carried out in early September. Thousands of US troops remain in waters near Iran to enforce a naval blockade intended to keep tankers carrying Iranian oil from reaching the global market. A third aircraft carrier and thousands more troops are also heading to the Middle East.
