In Prince William County, Virginia, retirees Clete and Lynn have spent more than 20 years handing out pro-Republican campaign leaflets outside a polling station on Election Day. Their routine is to arrive at 6 a.m., stay until 10, then go home and follow the results on television.

But this year, Lynn said, “we’re in trouble.” Polls point to possible Republican losses in the House of Representatives and potentially the Senate, while early voting has surged in the Democratic-leaning state.

A record 1.6 million people had voted in Virginia before November 3, compared with fewer than one million in the previous midterm elections, suggesting strong voter participation.
