The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, shifting the tournament from its original January–February schedule to December 23, 2027, through January 21, 2028. The governing body said the change followed exceptional circumstances in the region and logistical difficulties affecting travel.

The tournament had been scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027, with matches planned in Jeddah, Riyadh and Al Khobar. The AFC said the revised dates would be submitted to FIFA for approval. The decision followed discussions between the confederation and Saudi officials, with the AFC saying the postponement was necessary for the safety and interests of teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.

Security concerns have also affected other sporting events in Saudi Arabia. The 2027 Dakar Rally was moved out of the country, an exhibition tennis tournament was postponed, and the WTA Finals, originally set to be held in Riyadh, will instead take place at Indian Wells in the United States. Domestic football and Asian Champions League matches have also been affected.

Saudi Arabia’s local organising committee chairman, Yasser al-Misehal, said the country was ready to host the competition on its new dates and that preparations would continue. The AFC’s announcement came amid pressure from Asian football associations concerned about the safety of players and fans.
