Sporting beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, returning to winning ways in the Champions League during a period of change at the club. Issa Doumbia scored the only goal in the 59th minute, while Silas Andersen stood out as Sporting’s most effective midfielder.
Tiago Fernandes took charge as interim coach following Rui Borges’ departure and before Paulo Fonseca’s arrival. Fernandes, who had previously stepped in to lead Sporting’s first team in 2018, made several changes to the starting lineup, including bringing Rui Silva back in goal and fielding Eduardo Quaresma, Eduardo Felicíssimo and Gonçalo Inácio in a three-man defence.
Shakhtar started the match with greater control and made it difficult for Sporting to build attacks. The Ukrainian side had the clearer chances in a first half that ended goalless, with Alisson Santana and Kauã Elias both coming close. Sporting’s attacks were often channelled down the right through Geny Catamo, while Andersen offered a key link between midfield and the forwards.
Sporting began the second half more assertively, but Shakhtar soon regained momentum. The breakthrough came when Andersen played the ball towards Luis Suárez in the area. Pedro Henrique attempted to clear it, and Doumbia fired in off the rebound.
Sporting nearly extended its lead soon afterwards, as Suárez headed wide and Quaresma forced a strong save from Dmytro Riznyk. Shakhtar pressed for an equaliser late on: Alisson hit the post in the 82nd minute, and Rui Silva held a Newerton header in stoppage time. Sporting held on for the win, its third victory in four Champions League matches, according to the source report.
