An adult yellow-bellied caiman measuring approximately two meters in length was rescued early Monday morning on a residential street in Araçatuba, located in the interior of São Paulo state. According to reports from TV TEM, a local resident spotted the reptile on the sidewalk in the Atlântico 2 neighborhood and immediately contacted the Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and successfully secured the animal without incident. The caiman showed no apparent injuries and was subsequently transferred to the Environmental Military Police. This agency is responsible for conducting a veterinary evaluation and arranging for the reptile's release back into its natural habitat. Authorities were unable to determine the specific origin of the animal or how it had entered the urban area.
Thiago Davanso, a biologist and doctor in zoology, explained that the presence of yellow-bellied caimans in residential zones is often linked to urban expansion and drainage systems. He noted that these nocturnal animals hunt at night and may enter sewage galleries and pipes in search of prey such as rats, birds, and small mammals, eventually emerging onto city streets.
Davanso further highlighted that heavy rains and flash floods can also force these reptiles to move through underground channels. The fragmentation of native vegetation due to urban growth has brought water bodies closer to cities, increasing the likelihood of such encounters. Experts recommend that residents who encounter a caiman in an urban area maintain a safe distance, avoid attempting to rescue the animal themselves, and immediately contact the Fire Department or Environmental Police.
