The first of 98 newly designed S-Bahn trains has officially begun operations within the Rhein-Main Transport Association (RMV) area. According to Deutsche Bahn and RMV, this initial unit will run on line S4 in Frankfurt am Main as part of a broader modernization effort that aims to redesign approximately half of all S-Bahn vehicles in the region.

The exterior design has been updated from the traditional red to a white body with a blue stripe and a green front. Inside, the trains feature a palette dominated by white and gray, accented with wood-effect elements. Beyond aesthetics, the interior layout has been significantly altered; first-class compartments have been removed to create more space for boarding and alighting. These changes allow each train to accommodate 559 passengers, representing a 15% increase in capacity compared to previous models.

Knut Ringat, Chairman of the RMV Executive Board, stated that redesigning these 98 vehicles is intended to increase overall capacity and prepare the S-Bahn for the coming decade. This initiative supports growing public transport usage in Frankfurt and its surroundings. Passenger numbers reached 839 million in 2025, a figure that has risen annually since 2020 and now exceeds pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019, which stood at 808 million.

The new interior includes specific amenities for different user groups. Cyclists can utilize a dedicated area where bikes are parked diagonally with the front wheel against the wall, while separate zones have been allocated for wheelchairs and strollers. Additionally, each vehicle will be equipped with 34 power outlets to benefit commuters using the service for their daily work travel.

The modernization project involves the ten-year-old ET 430 train series. The vehicles are being completed and deployed gradually, with the entire fleet scheduled to be fully upgraded by the summer of 2029.
