Brazilian dentist Condia Mendes completed the New York City Marathon at age 75, finishing her first 42.195-kilometer race. The marathon was a goal she had been building toward for a decade.
Mendes said she began running to find a source of fulfillment she could pursue independently. During the race, she focused on keeping her own pace and successfully crossed the finish line.
Her path to the marathon began with walking, which gradually developed into short runs. She increased her distances over time and said the practice gave her greater autonomy and confidence. During training, she also adjusted her diet and sleep, followed an exercise plan and included strength work to prepare her body for the race.
Personal trainer Cíntia Pereira Chagas said Mendes worked on targeted muscle exercises, strength, planks and squats. Coach Fabiano Peçanha said health and safety remained priorities, including through medical checks.
Mendes is already looking ahead to more challenges. “I’m going to run until I’m 100. I’m going to run all over the world,” she said.
